Iran’s Actions in the Strait of Hormuz Threaten Global Economy

According to a United Arab Emirates official, Iran is attempting to destabilize the global economy by blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Rana Nuseibeh, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs, made this statement during a recent interview.

Nuseibeh explained that the closure of this crucial route has hindered the worldwide flow of gas and oil amid a conflict that Iran supposedly did not instigate. The UAE has been targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks as part of Iran’s broader regional response.

“What is happening in the Gulf obviously extends beyond the region,” she said, emphasizing that Iran’s actions against the United States and Jordan should be viewed as a threat to the global community.

Highlighting a history of diplomatic efforts, she mentioned that the UAE has long sought negotiations with Iran. “We’ve been trying this for decades,” she noted, recalling her visit to Tehran in early 2018, which was described at the time as yielding “useful and constructive talks.”

A UAE official recognized that Dubai understands U.S. concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities and missile technology, noting that Iran’s recent decisions have been reckless. Instead of pursuing dialogues, the official stated that Iran has launched over 2,200 missiles and drones against the UAE, targeting civilian infrastructure most of the time.

“This has to stop,” Nuseibeh asserted.

Nuseibeh also raised questions about Iran’s motivations, suggesting that threats toward the UAE might stem from a perceived threat to Iran itself.

The UAE was among the first to sign the Abraham Accords, which aimed to foster diplomatic ties between Israel and its neighboring countries, underscoring its commitment to regional stability.

“We pride ourselves on being a progressive and tolerant economy,” she remarked, questioning the Iranian government’s use of its resources for its people.

During the interview, Nuseibeh was asked about the potential for the UAE to take a more aggressive stance as the conflict escalates. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt revealed that discussions between the U.S. and Iran are ongoing, even amidst setbacks involving peace offers.

Furthermore, Emirates Ambassador Yousef al-Otaiba indicated that simply reaching a ceasefire would not suffice. In agreement, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince has previously urged for sustained action against Iran to ensure its regime’s downfall.

In concluding remarks, Nuseibeh highlighted the UAE’s continual search for diplomatic solutions, but emphasized that it requires Iran to acknowledge the consequences of its actions. “The light at the end of the tunnel is in Iran’s hands,” she concluded.
