McGrady’s Challenge to Towns
NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady has called on Karl-Anthony Towns to fully embrace his potential. He made these comments during an appearance on “Shine Time” with Adam Shine, where he touched on how the Knicks might succeed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
McGrady emphasized the need for Towns to get motivated. “He just needs to be motivated,” McGrady remarked. “I believe he wants it. His coaches and teammates are probably urging him, too. But he must truly want it—for himself and the team. If he approaches it that way, no one can slow him down. He has immense talent.”
He went on to highlight Towns’ unique skills, noting, “With his size and skill set, if he commits, he’s almost impossible to guard. He can do so much—whether it’s shooting from beyond the arc, driving to the basket, or passing. But ultimately, it’s up to KAT to showcase that in these crucial games.”
Recently, Towns’ stats have dipped; he’s averaging 20.2 points per game on a 49.4% shooting rate from the field and 36.6% from three-point range—his lowest figures since his rookie season.
Still, Towns has echoed Coach Mike Brown’s sentiment that adapting to the new offensive system has been a challenge. He claims to be getting more acclimated and has improved in recent outings.
McGrady also expressed concerns about the Knicks’ defensive identity heading into the playoffs. “It’s not that they lack talent,” he said. “The issue is they’ve lost their defensive edge. Last season, they were known for tough, tenacious defense. This year? Not so much. There have been numerous contradictions in their performance. Just like with Karl-Anthony Towns, there’s a lot of unmet expectations.”
Interestingly, despite this criticism, the Knicks boasted a defensive rating of 111.7 this Thursday, ranking them fifth in the NBA. So, it seems there are varying perspectives on their capabilities.
