New Coalition Raises Concerns Over AI Risks for Children and Workers
As artificial intelligence continues to permeate schools, workplaces, and homes, a fresh coalition is sounding the alarm about the increasing risks to children and employees. This group, known as the Alliance for a Better Future (ABF), is advocating for safeguards surrounding AI technology as discussions about regulation unfold in the U.S. government.
“It’s crucial for us to determine if this incredible technology will enhance our children’s futures or pose harm to them,” said ABF CEO Janet Kelly.
Kelly emphasized that the organization is aligned with families aiming for responsible implementation of AI technologies. “We’re committed to ensuring it’s beneficial for kids, and I believe this can indeed be achieved,” she stated.
As AI rapidly integrates into everyday life without much oversight, there are growing concerns among advocates about the implications of current decisions on family safety. ABF recently launched with a poignant video featuring parents who shared devastating stories about their children suffering harm, with some even taking their own lives due to interactions with AI chatbots.
ABF presents itself as an advocate for innovation and family welfare, asserting that AI can yield great advantages, but only if it’s developed thoughtfully. As a mother of three, Kelly mentioned, “I am confident that we can produce excellent AI that reflects not just Silicon Valley values, but American values too.” She highlighted the need for policymakers to prioritize the needs of children, workers, and creators over the tech firms pushing these advancements.
The organization plans to implement targeted advertising and educational initiatives while engaging with both federal and state entities. They anticipate investing significantly this year, aiming to elevate the voices of worried parents and workers.
This effort builds on previous advocacy for children’s online safety by bringing various organizations together under one banner. The Policy Council, led by Dr. Brad Littlejohn from American Compass, includes members from several influential groups like the Family Policy Alliance and the Heritage Foundation.
