As Democratic efforts to challenge President Trump’s military actions against Iran are unsuccessful, some more progressive lawmakers are redirecting their attention to other objectives.
Recently, Representative Rashida Tlaib from Michigan put forward a resolution aimed at preventing Trump from engaging in or endorsing Israeli military activities in Lebanon without Congressional consent. This bill could potentially come up for a vote when the House reconvenes in mid-April, with fellow Democrats Delia Ramirez and Nydia Velasquez joining as co-sponsors.
Interestingly, Tlaib’s resolution does not reference Hezbollah, the Iranian-supported militant group that has engaged in conflict against Israel following the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
The group has been launching rocket attacks on Israel since the onset of the Iranian conflict, including a coordinated strike with Iran earlier in March. In response, Israel initiated counterattacks and a significant ground operation aimed at removing militants from southern Lebanon.
It’s worth mentioning that U.S. forces are not involved in this conflict. Tlaib remarked, “This campaign of ethnic cleansing is only possible because of American support, funded by our tax dollars. We must act now to stop these crimes against humanity and this illegal invasion of Lebanon,” highlighting her position as the only Palestinian-American in Congress.
A spokesperson for Tlaib, however, didn’t respond to inquiries regarding whether she holds Hezbollah or Iranian-backed groups accountable for the attacks on Israel. Her current push for war powers follows a failed bipartisan resolution that sought to limit Trump’s military authority in Iran earlier this month.
Tlaib has also proposed another resolution requesting that the Trump administration direct Israel to halt military actions in Lebanon and cut off arms shipments to the country. This bill also omits any mention of Hezbollah but accuses Israel of planning acts it labels as “crimes against humanity and genocide” in Lebanon.
The resolution notes, “The United States is co-authoring this destruction through the weapons, intelligence, logistics, and diplomatic support it provides to the Israeli government.” Tlaib, known for her outspoken criticism of Israel, has faced scrutiny over alleged connections to foreign terrorist organizations in the past.
Following the October 7 attack, Israel has notably weakened Hezbollah, which had supported Hamas and launched multiple assaults on the nation. Still, threats from Iranian-backed militias persist in the current climate. In early March, rocket fire from Hezbollah resulted in the deaths of two Israelis in northern Israel.
