Republican Representative Don Bacon urges the removal of Russia from the UN Security Council

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) has reiterated his stance on removing Russia from the U.N. Security Council, labeling the nation a “pariah state.” In a recent statement, he urged the United Nations General Assembly to vote for this exclusion, emphasizing that Russia should be treated accordingly.

Bacon made his case in a newspaper post, arguing that it’s unacceptable for Russia, one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, to hold that position given its actions. He pointed out that the U.S., U.K., China, and France are the other permanent members.

Back in February 2022, he expressed his discontent on social media, remarking on the unfortunate reality of Russia’s role in the Security Council. He suggested that as many international associations as possible should exclude Russia, reinforcing his view of the country as a pariah.

Fast forward to December 2023, Bacon described Russia’s membership as an embarrassment for the U.N., given its ongoing military aggression and humanitarian violations. He insisted that Russia needs to be removed from its Security Council seat.

Bacon also voiced a desire for the U.S. to increase military support for Ukraine. He noted that Russia is reportedly struggling on the battlefield and in its economy, with its attacks focused on civilian areas. He feels it’s crucial to impose sanctions on Russia and expedite military aid to Ukraine, mentioning that the House of Representatives would address this in a couple of weeks.

The congressman, who has served since early 2017, announced last year that he will not seek re-election in 2026.
