Attention on Arkansas Republican Race
A provocative social media post by a Republican candidate for the Arkansas secretary of state position is igniting discussions ahead of the state’s Republican runoff elections.
Veteran Brian Norris is set to compete against state Sen. Kim Hammer in the ballot battle this Tuesday for the GOP nomination to succeed Secretary of State Cole Jester.
Both contenders have garnered attention due to their backing of President Donald Trump, but they propose different strategies for implementing his vision for voting reform.
Hammer enjoys the endorsement of key Arkansas GOP figures, including Sen. Tom Cotton, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Lt. Gov. Leslie Rutledge, Attorney General Tim Griffin, and the current Secretary of State, Cole Jester.
In his support for Hammer, Jester urged Norris to exit the race, referring to previous controversial posts Norris made on social media.
Some of these posts responded to Cotton, with Norris infamously stating, “With all due respect, from one veteran to another… fuck you Tom!”
When questioned about his harsh words, Norris explained that this outburst was linked to a long-standing grievance he had with Cotton after his military retirement.
In a KATV interview, he acknowledged that he sometimes used inappropriate language but promised, “you will never hear me speak like that again.”
Norris, positioning himself as an outsider, is supported by far-right Trump allies, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn and My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell. Hammer emerged as one of the top vote-getters during the Republican primary on March 3. Since no candidate secured over 50% of the votes, the election proceeded to a runoff.
The winner will face Democrat Kelly Grapp, who ran unopposed, in the general election scheduled for November.
The eventual Republican nominee is widely viewed as the frontrunner for the general election in Arkansas, a state that hasn’t favored a Democrat statewide since 2010.
