Mets Face Challenges Despite Big Win Against Giants
SAN FRANCISCO — The night started with excitement for the Mets as Nolan McLean took the mound, showcasing impressive dominance. However, the story quickly shifted to a frustrating moment when Juan Soto was forced to exit the game due to a strained right calf after just one inning. This left many wondering about the timeline for his return, which is a significant concern for the team.
Soto managed to get a single in his brief appearance, but his injury came as he was running the bases on an RBI by Bo Bichette. The Mets, having recently broken a three-game losing streak with a convincing 10-3 victory over the Giants, now await updates on their star player, who represents a major investment for the team.
Meanwhile, McLean was nearly flawless, holding a perfect game through the fifth inning. But as the game progressed into the sixth, his pitch count rose, and he couldn’t maintain the historic pace. In total, he pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit, two walks, and racking up four strikeouts while giving up one earned and one unearned run, all on 93 pitches.
Francisco Alvarez shined for the Mets as he blasted two home runs, contributing to a strong showing with three homers overall, the other courtesy of Marcus Semien. This was the Mets’ most potent offensive display since their opening day against the Pirates. Alvarez’s homer in the eighth inning hit just shy of the center field warning track, highlighting his impressive performance.
The buzz around McLean’s potential perfect game began to build after he confidently retired the first two batters of the fifth inning before striking out Heriot Ramos with a notable pitch that caught the inside corner. However, the sixth inning proved more challenging. After issuing a walk to Harrison Bader and giving another walk to Patrick Bailey, McLean’s no-hitter bid came to an end when Gerard Encarnacion finally made an out, followed by Willie Adames hitting a double that drove in the Giants’ first run.
Brooks Lally later took the mound and struck out Rafael Devers, but a passed ball allowed yet another run for the Giants. The Mets quickly responded in the seventh with Alvarez’s second home run, and Luis Robert Jr. added an RBI, boosting their lead to 7-2. Mark Vientos continued the momentum with an additional RBI single.
Bichette had a standout performance, hitting 3-for-5 on the night, which was likely his best game since joining the Mets. The team did have to manage without Jorge Polanco, who sat out due to left Achilles tendonitis, raising concerns about his immediate playing status.
The Mets kicked off strong by sending eight batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs, though they missed an opportunity to break the game wide open. A single from Bichette and a walk to Robert loaded the bases, but Brett Batty’s attempt ended with a double play.
Semien, who had struggled the night before, found relief by hitting an RBI single and soon followed it up with a two-run homer in the fourth, giving the Mets a 4-0 edge. Alvarez made things even brighter with a home run soon after.
As the game progressed, the Giants managed a second hit in the seventh inning, but Brazoban returned strong, ending the inning on a high note. In the eighth, Luis Arraez added an RBI single, while Batty and Carson Benge each contributed with RBI hits, bringing the Mets’ total runs to ten.
