A father from Maine tragically lost his life while trying to save his two children during a family vacation in Florida.
Ryan Jennings, 46, from Cumberland County, was spending time with his family when the incident took place. He was at Juno Beach in Palm Beach County on a Wednesday afternoon, visiting his parents with his wife and three children.
His wife, Emily, shared the heartbreaking details on Facebook, describing how Ryan quickly reacted when he saw his 12-year-old stepson and 9-year-old daughter struggling in the water. “He lost a fight yesterday but saved the kids from a rip current,” she wrote. “He threw Jax to safety to call for help and held my Charlie over the water until someone came close. His final gift was bringing the kids back to me.”
Emily expressed her deep sorrow, saying, “My soulmate and best friend. I never wanted to spend a day without you. I can’t believe this is happening. Our love is something that most people never experience.”
The tragedy unfolded around 3:25 p.m. in an area without lifeguards, according to reports. First responders arrived swiftly, managing to rescue the children but were unable to save Ryan.
Authorities later ruled his death a drowning. They indicated that water quality might have contributed to the presence of rip currents that day.
This incident underscores the importance of swimming in areas supervised by lifeguards, who are trained to recognize dangerous conditions, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
Friends and family remembered Ryan as a devoted father. Geraldine Orilla remarked that “his heroic actions reflect the kind of person he was. His loss has left an immense void for everyone who knew him.”
In a poignant moment, Emily shared that they were expecting their fourth child. “There’s so much sadness, yet a flicker of hope as we look forward to welcoming another little one,” she wrote.
Amidst her grief, she reflected, “I don’t know how I’ll manage. I think about Ryan constantly while trying to support my beautiful children.”
