Belief, a 'sacred journey,' and Trump will make for an unforgettable World Cup, says the soccer president of the island nation.

Divine Intervention in Curaçao’s World Cup Qualification

The president of Curaçao’s soccer federation has expressed that divine intervention played a role in his team’s qualification for the World Cup, suggesting that even figures like President Trump could have a guiding influence.

Gilbert Martina, who leads the Curaçao Football Federation, chose humility over boasting about his achievements, describing the progress in the country’s soccer program as part of a long, meaningful journey. In an interview, he shared experiences of divine encounters, highlighting a visit to the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where he felt a connection to Trump.

Martina believes that Trump will contribute positively to make this World Cup a standout event. “We are all spiritual beings needing to care for one another,” he expressed, emphasizing that football brings unity, mirroring FIFA’s motto. He feels confident that all involved, Trump included, will drive the success of the tournament, dubbing it “the biggest thing on earth.”

Daily Rituals and Spiritual Beliefs

A former insurance executive and CEO, Martina attributes much of his success to his spiritual practices, which include daily expressions of gratitude, prayer, and meditation in preparation for what lies ahead.

He insists on the importance of this divine journey, having always believed his nation could qualify for the World Cup. Martina refrains from providing any practical rationale for how such a tiny nation could unite for a shared goal in under a year. “The universe, God, or whatever we wish to call it,” he noted, as his team began to “co-create beauty.” That’s when the magic unfolds.

He recalls that on the day he took over the presidency of the federation in April 2025, he anticipated this very moment, predicting to his wife that his team would make it to the World Cup. “There are no coincidences,” he asserted firmly.

Overcoming Organizational Challenges

Martina also elaborated on transforming the federation’s organization and procedures, doing this while being careful not to claim all the credit for the improvements.

Before his leadership, the Curaçao soccer program faced chaos. Issues included disorganized travel arrangements, unpaid player salaries, and internal conflicts within teams. Martina remarked that distractions were numerous, and he needed to restore focus. “It’s too distracting if you’re not concentrated on qualifying.”

After he assumed leadership, Curaçao remained unbeaten across eight matches, earning their spot for the World Cup, where they will compete in Group E against Germany, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador, with their first game scheduled against Germany on June 14th.

A Message for Aspiration

He likened his life philosophy and national aspirations to that of a hummingbird, which seeks only the best nectar and blossoms. “That’s the powerful message. When we incorporate this into our daily lives and intentions, remarkable things can occur,” he stated, suggesting that excellence should be the goal within both organization and personal pursuits.
