Shooting late at night close to the White House raises Secret Service concerns

Secret Service on Alert After Early Morning Shooting

Early Sunday, a shooting incident occurred near Lafayette Park, just north of the White House, where President Trump is currently staying for the weekend. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Authorities stated that the shooter is still unaccounted for, and a joint effort involving the Intelligence Police, Metropolitan Police Department, and U.S. Park Police is underway to locate any vehicles or persons of interest. The investigation is ongoing.

“While operations at the White House continue as normal, we have heightened security measures in effect,” officials indicated.

The details surrounding the shooting, including the identity of the vehicle or the individual involved, remain unclear. It appears the event took place just after midnight.

Interestingly, Lafayette Park has been unavailable to the public for several weeks due to renovations.

President Trump remained at the White House throughout the weekend. On Sunday, he took a motorcade around Memorial Circle, discussing plans for an “Independence Arch,” before heading to Trump National Golf Club in Virginia.

The only notable event on his agenda for Sunday was a private family Easter dinner at the White House.

This shooting adds to a series of recent security concerns. Just last weekend, an F-16 fighter jet was scrambled from Palm Beach International Airport—where Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence is located—after contact was lost with a nearby plane. At that time, Trump was on the golf course while Air Force One was at the airport. Officials confirmed there was no risk to the president or the aircraft.

President Trump has faced multiple assassination attempts, one notably on July 13, 2024, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a bullet almost struck him. Later that year, a suspect named Ryan Routh was arrested after attempting to set up a sniper’s nest at Trump International Golf Club. He was discovered approximately 400 meters away from Trump before the Secret Service intervened.
