Rory McIlroy’s Relationship Turmoil

Rory McIlroy’s past actions, which led to his breakup with Caroline Wozniacki, nearly cost him his marriage to Erica Stoll.

Golf journalist Alan Shipnack delves into McIlroy’s love life in his upcoming book, Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar. This book is set to be released two days before the Masters, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of McIlroy’s first green jacket, which completed his career Grand Slam. That milestone seems to hang over the narrative of his personal life.

Shipnack recounts how McIlroy met Stoll at the 2012 Ryder Cup, where she worked as a PGA official. A memorable moment came when she helped him get a police escort because he was running late.

Despite his then-ongoing relationship with Wozniacki, rumors began to swirl about an affair with Stoll. One employee from the PGA reflected in the book that “He was completely devoted to Erica,” describing it as almost common knowledge among staff, humorously wondering if he’d “signed yet.”

Group chats among staff often showcased their playful banter, filled with emojis hinting at McIlroy’s feelings for Stoll.

After getting engaged to Wozniacki in December 2013, McIlroy ended that engagement just five months later. He and Stoll reportedly started seeing each other shortly after but kept it low-key until 2015.

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley notes Stoll’s quiet demeanor and acknowledges that McIlroy’s strong personality makes it challenging to be his partner. Shipnack even likens Stoll to “Neo Elin,” referencing Tiger Woods’ ex-wife, who maintains a low profile.

In 2024, while Stoll was at home, rumors about McIlroy’s potential connection with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis circulated, though sources close to them insisted the relationship was merely platonic.

However, McIlroy’s reputation likely contributed to the gossip. Amid rising speculation, he filed for divorce in May 2024, citing that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.” Yet, just a month later, he reversed that decision, stating they recognized their best path forward as a family, especially with their young daughter, Poppy, in the picture.

Shipnack reflected that the swift change in McIlroy’s decision pointed more at his character than Stoll’s. He questioned the wisdom of filing for divorce without being utterly certain about its outcome and noted McIlroy’s penchant for impulsiveness in various aspects of his life.

Stoll stood by McIlroy’s side during significant moments, including his victory at Augusta last year, though she faced difficulties, such as being heckled at the Ryder Cup in September.

As McIlroy prepares for a shot at becoming the first golfer to repeat as Masters champion since Woods did in 2001-2002, he faces not only competition on the golf course but the complexities of his personal relationships as well.

Woods, meanwhile, is not competing this week; he was arrested for drunk driving on March 27 and has since left for medical treatment, landing his private jet in Switzerland.
