Marlins’ Alcantara Falls Short Against Reds in Thrilling Finish

Sandy Alcantara, the Miami Marlins’ star pitcher, showcased his skills brilliantly against the Cincinnati Reds, aiming to achieve back-to-back shutouts for the first time in over ten years. He held a 2-0 lead as he entered the ninth inning, but the Reds started finding their rhythm against him.

After a double from Matt McClain and a walk from Ellie Delacruz, Alcantara was ejected with one out left in the ninth. Reliever Anthony Bender stepped in and managed to maintain the pressure on the Reds, but ultimately the game ended with Cincinnati tying it up.

As the game extended into extras, the Reds capitalized, scoring four runs in the tenth, sealing a 6-3 victory over the Marlins.

Alcantara, despite his impressive performance—allowing only three hits and striking out six—seemed frustrated by the coaching decision to pull him from the game. “I think it’s fair to be asked how you feel before you walk out of the game after throwing 95 pitches,” he remarked, acknowledging the reality of the situation but also expressing his disappointment. He added, “We have to prepare for the next trip. Tomorrow we’ll come back and fight like we did today.”

Coach Clayton McCullough explained his decision to remove Alcantara, noting the strategic rationale since this was the Reds’ fourth time facing him. He believed Bender offered a better chance to win the game, though, in retrospect, it didn’t work out as intended. McCullough lamented, “It certainly doesn’t feel good to have this decision change direction and end up not being in our favor.” He was reflective about the weight of such decisions, stating that losing is particularly hard for him.

Alcantara is a standout talent for the Marlins, earning the National League Cy Young Award in 2022. So far this season, his stats reflect a solid 0.74 ERA with 18 strikeouts, and the two earned runs he allowed this game marked just his first three starts.
