Joe Theismann on NFL’s Evolving Game Schedule
Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann has shared his thoughts about the NFL’s changing landscape. He indicates that the league has a rich legacy but is increasingly expanding its prime-time schedule to encompass holiday games and international matches, shifting from the traditional Sunday afternoon slots.
Theismann remarked on the shift in broadcasting, noting that, “The networks we used to rely on—ABC, NBC, CBS—just aren’t what they used to be.” He emphasized how fans are now exposed to a variety of streaming services and networks that have altered the viewing experience.
“It’s a different world. Fans used to eagerly anticipate Sundays because that was pretty much the only day for football. But now? It feels like there’s a game at all times—Monday, Thursday, even Saturdays sometimes,” he said. Theismann himself thinks this gives fans an abundance of choices when it comes to watching NFL games.
This upcoming season will begin with a Wednesday game in Melbourne, Australia. Notably, the NFL is also introducing a Thanksgiving Eve game and more midweek games this year.
With the league’s expansion, Theismann sees it as an opportunity for fans as they can easily catch games live, rather than just reading about them later. However, he acknowledges a certain nostalgia, stating, “I guess we all have a longing for the simpler times. But, change is inevitable, and I believe in adapting.” He expressed a positive stance on how the NFL is evolving to meet modern demands.
The American Century Championship
On another note, Theismann shared excitement about participating in the upcoming American Century Championship. Having competed for 36 years, he mentioned that, while his golf handicap has shifted from 2 to 9, he feels it’s a unique event worth attending. “It’s really special. You get to connect with some incredible people, and as a fan myself, it’s just exciting to be up close,” he noted.
He looks forward to the chance to reconnect with familiar faces like Jerry Rice and Tony Romo during the tournament. Theismann also shared a personal favorite: “Top Gun: Maverick” ranks as his all-time favorite movie.
With the American Century Championship raising more than $8 million for various charities, Theismann highlighted its philanthropic goals, praising its impact and the efforts behind it. The event is set to be broadcast on NBC and Peacock, further expanding its reach.
