Israel Initiates Discussions with Lebanon Following U.S. Pressure to Reduce Attacks

Israel to Start Direct Talks with Lebanon Amid Airstrike Tensions

On Thursday, Israel announced it would enter into direct negotiations with Lebanon, a decision made following extensive airstrikes in the region. U.S. officials are said to have urged Israel to reduce the scale of its bombing campaigns.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a brief statement directing his cabinet to pursue talks with Lebanon, with the goal of “establishing peaceful relations.” This announcement followed significant attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, despite a temporary ceasefire currently in effect.

The discussions are expected to center on disarming Hezbollah and fostering peaceful relations between the two nations. Netanyahu expressed appreciation for the Lebanese Prime Minister’s call for the demilitarization of Beirut in his statement.

Netanyahu stated, “In light of Lebanon’s repeated requests for direct negotiations, I instructed yesterday’s cabinet meeting to commence these discussions as soon as feasible.”

Reports indicate that President Donald Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff reached out to Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu, pressing for de-escalation of attacks. Notably, Israeli officials mentioned that while “no ceasefire has been reached in Lebanon,” the negotiations are slated to begin next week at the State Department in Washington, D.C.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has called for a ceasefire, following months of negotiation efforts between the two nations.

Iranian officials have expressed concerns over Israel’s actions, claiming threats to withdraw from ceasefire discussions with the U.S. unless Israel abides by agreements. They also reported an unidentified drone entering their airspace and cited violations involving uranium enrichment rights.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who facilitated the recent ceasefire, urged all parties to adhere to the agreement. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy in achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Trump had recently warned that “the entire civilization will perish” if the Strait of Hormuz isn’t reopened by a specific deadline.
