Eric Swalwell Exits Gubernatorial Race Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Eric Swalwell has announced his withdrawal from the gubernatorial race, following serious allegations of sexual misconduct from multiple women.

On Sunday, he stated, “I am canceling my campaign for governor. I deeply apologize to my family, staff, friends, and supporters for the errors in judgment I made in the past.”

He also conveyed his intention to fight against what he called “serious false allegations,” clarifying that this matter is personal and should not involve his campaign.

Swalwell’s reputation took a significant hit after four women came forward with accusations, including one that alleges rape. A former employee described an incident in 2024 where she claims she was intoxicated and assaulted in New York, resulting in visible injuries.

Another woman recounted waking up in a hotel room next to Swalwell after a night out, asserting that he touched her without her consent.

Swalwell vehemently denied these allegations, labeling them “completely false” in a video shared online. He and his legal team have suggested that the timing of these accusations may be politically motivated, given his prominent position as a leading Democratic candidate.

The situation escalated on Saturday when an unsigned letter condemned Swalwell’s alleged actions. This letter sought understanding from staff members who may need to continue working for financial reasons. Unfortunately, since the allegations surfaced, Swalwell’s campaign has unraveled quickly.

Many of his political allies have distanced themselves, with some organizations and unions retracting their support. Gavin Newsom responded on Sunday, emphasizing that the allegations are deeply troubling and warrant serious consideration, though he stopped short of calling for Swalwell’s resignation.

The scandal has fueled a contentious atmosphere in Congress, with Republicans and Democrats targeting each other’s members over past misdeeds. For instance, Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna plans to push for Swalwell’s removal from office, while Democratic leaders may retaliate against Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez, who is facing his own scandal.

Gonzalez acknowledged having an affair but denied any connection to the tragic suicide of his former partner involved in the situation. This has also led to discussions around potential expulsions of other members accused of misconduct.

Legal troubles continue for Swalwell as well, with reports emerging of an indictment suggesting he employed a Brazilian nanny illegally for several years. This complaint has been forwarded to the Department of Homeland Security for investigation.

Prior to these controversies, Swalwell faced scrutiny regarding his residency and financial struggles, including withdrawing retirement savings and postponing tax payments. Records reveal he utilized campaign funds for childcare expenses throughout his gubernatorial campaign.

Ultimately, the sexual assault allegations proved to be a decisive factor in his campaign’s downfall. Rumors had circulated about these allegations a week prior, with Swalwell expressing confidence that they were merely political attacks. He asserted at a City Hall event earlier this month that there was no basis for these claims, saying there had never been a legal settlement or allegation against him.

However, conflicting reports suggest he has used non-disclosure agreements, a point contradicted by those familiar with such contracts being applied within his past staff.
