Democrats part ways with Eric Swalwell following sexual assault claims that ruin his career

Accusations Against Swalwell Force Campaign Suspension

California Representative Eric Swalwell faces criticism from fellow Democrats following allegations of sexual assault from former staffers. These claims have led him to withdraw from the gubernatorial race entirely.

Swalwell suspended his campaign just two days after it began. Allegations of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct surfaced, but he has firmly denied these accusations. Nonetheless, the backlash from a leaked video, an ongoing investigation, and the withdrawal of support ultimately compelled him to resign.

In a statement on social media, Swalwell expressed remorse, stating, “I’m canceling my gubernatorial campaign. I sincerely apologize to my family, friends, and supporters for my past errors in judgment.” He added that while he intends to contest the allegations, this fight is separate from his campaign.

Despite Swalwell’s intentions, issues did not stop at him. Reports concerning the allegations quickly involved numerous colleagues. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) voiced his concerns over the accusations, emphasizing the need to take the woman’s story seriously. He stated unequivocally that he was withdrawing his support and believed Swalwell should also step back.

Following the alarming allegations of sexual misconduct against Swalwell, House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for a thorough investigation and insisted that Swalwell should end his campaign for governor immediately. He described the situation as unacceptable for anyone, especially a public official, and insisted it must be treated with the gravity it deserves.

In addition to the demand for an investigation, some lawmakers and former staff members called for Swalwell’s removal from his position.

Lawmakers are pushing for bipartisan support to address not only Swalwell’s situation but also that of Texas Congressman Tony Gonzalez, who recently suspended his re-election campaign after admitting to an affair with a former aide. Representative Jared Huffman remarked that Swalwell’s conduct suggests an abuse of power under House Ethics Rules, indicating he should resign from his congressional role, along with Gonzalez.

The Democratic primary for California’s governorship has shrunk to five candidates, putting political pressure on Swalwell’s former supporters. Polls suggest his backing might shift to the other remaining Democratic candidates.
