Eric Swalwell Resigns Amid Allegations
Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, officially stepped down from his position in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. This resignation comes amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and growing calls for his resignation or even expulsion.
Swalwell’s swift decline in political standing was communicated through a letter he read on the House floor. In it, he apologized to his family and constituents but firmly denied the accusations against him. “I will fight the materially false allegations made against me,” he stated. However, he also acknowledged needing to take responsibility for certain mistakes in his past.
The announcement followed Swalwell’s indication on Monday that he intended to resign, though he hadn’t specified a date at the time. His congressional term officially concluded at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
His resignation came just before attempts were made to expel him, along with other Congress members, due to various scandals. Swalwell addressed the expulsion efforts, arguing it was inappropriate to remove anyone without due process shortly after allegations arise. He noted that the focus on these claims was distracting him from his responsibilities to his constituents.
Inevitably, Swalwell’s resignation seems to have preempted a move by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, who had expressed intentions to force a vote for his expulsion unless he resigned voluntarily.
Recently, five women, including a former staff member, have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct and rape, prompting a criminal investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office into an incident reportedly occurring in a New York City hotel.
Additionally, FBI Director Kash Patel extended an invitation for Swalwell to discuss the allegations with the FBI. Swalwell has consistently denied any criminal behavior, labeling the charges against him as false and politically motivated. His attorney claimed that the timing and nature of the allegations were designed to damage his reputation after two decades in public service.
Swalwell had also withdrawn from the gubernatorial race in California over the weekend, as support dwindled from prominent Democrats who had previously backed him.
On a related note, Swalwell’s resignation was announced shortly after another representative, Tony Gonzalez from Texas, also resigned. Gonzalez admitted to having an affair with a former staffer, who tragically passed away. However, he has denied additional allegations of sexual misconduct.
Gonzalez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents of Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.
