Second grader with severe injuries left at school — police report stepmother was abusing the girl

Severe Abuse Allegations Against Stepmother

A young girl was reportedly left at Tedder Elementary School in Pompano Beach on April 9 with serious injuries, sparking immediate concern among school staff.

The child arrived with visible bruises, dried blood in her ears, and a black eye. Furthermore, marks on her arms and neck were evident, according to the arrest report.

When speaking with a school counselor, the girl shared that her stepmother had caused her injuries, including a cast she was wearing from a prior incident also attributed to her stepmother, Jonkey.

The Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported the girl to Coral Springs Medical Center for further treatment.

In interviews with authorities, the girl detailed shocking accounts of physical abuse, stating she had been beaten with a pot and whipped with a phone charger. A review by the Broward County Child Protection Team confirmed that her injuries were consistent with the abuse described.

Jonkey was arrested upon picking up the child from school. He acknowledged being aware of her injuries but claimed they were related to acne or a recent minor accident involving another girl and a door.

Jonkey’s attorney, Lindsay Chase, said she plans to present a full account of the situation in court, emphasizing her client’s denial of any wrongdoing. “The facts have been misrepresented, and crucial context is missing,” she stated, looking forward to the legal proceedings where tangible evidence will be examined.

In a court appearance, a Broward County Circuit Court judge expressed profound concern over the allegations, stating, “I’ve never encountered a case like this before. The victim’s safety is paramount.”

The child is currently in the care of the Department of Children and Families.
