Lena Dunham expressed how much she valued her time in rehab back in 2018. After five intense years working on *Girls*, it was really a crucial pause for her.
“I genuinely did enjoy it. I hadn’t had a break in so long,” she shared while promoting her new book, *Famesick*, and reflecting on her struggles with prescription drug addiction following a hysterectomy. She told The Post that it was a challenge to recover not just physically but emotionally too, especially after the fast-paced environment of writing and starring in the HBO series from 2012 to 2017.
During her time there, it felt different. Having to return to work after facing health issues, surgeries, and a family loss added to the stress she was under.
She described her stay at a rehab facility in Berkshire as meaningful. “It was a magical experience to embrace that silence, and you also meet others who share similar struggles, connecting in ways that even close friends and family might not understand,” she remarked.
Dunham attributed her rehab journey to her dependence on Klonopin, which was prescribed to her. She framed her addiction as part of a larger “American story” about over-prescription and inadequate warnings. While acknowledging personal responsibility, she emphasized that not everyone who is prescribed medication develops an addiction, but many do face that battle.
This year, she celebrated five years of sobriety, describing the period as “the happiest hours on earth.” In her book, she opens up about her experiences on *Girls*, recalling a specific incident involving co-star Adam Driver, noting his unpredictable outbursts on set. She also shared personal glimpses into her past relationships, including her time with musician Jack Antonoff.
