How Trump Has Changed America's Position in the World Before His Trip to China

Trump’s Upcoming Visit to China Aims to Strengthen Relations

President Donald Trump is set to visit China next month for a highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. As he approaches the second year of his presidency, Trump has made significant shifts in global economics and foreign policy.

The leaders are scheduled to convene in Beijing on May 14-15. Over the last 15 months, Trump has taken steps to reestablish America’s prominence in global affairs through various initiatives, impacting US-China relations notably.

“President Trump has clearly reinforced America’s standing internationally, signaling a departure from the perceived weakness during the Biden era. He has secured crucial trade deals, resolved conflicts through firm diplomacy, and bolstered military capabilities,” White House press secretary Olivia Wales remarked in a statement.

She added that Trump anticipates a productive visit to China, hoping it will establish a foundation for positive developments between the two nations moving forward.

On the trade front, Trump has negotiated several agreements intended to enhance relations with various nations while challenging China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Following tariffs put into effect on April 2, 2025, significant deals were struck with the European Union, the UK, and countries in Asia such as Japan and South Korea, effectively reallocating economic reliance from China.

Utilizing tariffs from the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which received a ruling in February, Trump gained substantial leverage over nations worldwide, prompting agreements that favor the US economy.

For instance, the EU trade agreement, which Trump described as “the greatest deal ever,” arose partly from China’s attempt to seek EU cooperation against what they viewed as Trump’s aggressive tariff policies. Just before the historic US-China accord, President Xi had discussions with EU officials to highlight the risks of economic decoupling.

Trade between the EU and the US hit approximately $1.8 trillion in 2024, representing a significant portion of global economic activity. The deal included a commitment from the EU to invest considerably in the US, further tightening their economic links.

Concerning diplomacy, under Trump’s leadership, the US has reinstated its role as a key mediator on the international scene, orchestrating several ceasefires and peace agreements amid global tensions, particularly after rising conflicts under the Biden administration.

Trump is reported to have played a crucial role in addressing conflicts in various regions, including the prolonged hostilities between two neighboring states and conflicts involving Israel, which saw an escalation following recent events.

While bolstering diplomatic relationships, the administration hasn’t hesitated to utilize military power when necessary, particularly against perceived threats from Iran and Venezuela.

On February 28, Trump initiated Operation Epic Fury in Iran, aiming to dismantle its military capabilities and curb its nuclear ambitions. After a recent ceasefire, the White House announced that the operation exceeded its goals and significantly weakened Iran’s military infrastructure.

Despite achievements, the conflict impacted global oil routes, but Trump claimed that Iran promised to reopen crucial shipping paths after US-imposed restrictions.

While discussing his relationship with China in light of these developments, Trump expressed optimism, anticipating positive interactions with Xi as they work towards mutual objectives.

In recent discussions, Trump noted that significant groundwork has already been laid for further negotiations, expecting swift progress in future arrangements.

Trump’s final engagement with Xi occurred during a tour of Southeast Asia last October, with Xi expressing intentions to invite Trump to the United States later this year.
