Anthony Richardson and the Colts: A Pending Split
Anthony Richardson seems to be on the outs with the Colts as both sides look towards a potential separation.
General manager Chris Ballard pointed out that the once-starting quarterback has been absent from the team’s offseason activities while they contemplate parting ways. He revealed, “Anthony is not here. He also requested a trade.” Ballard mentioned this shortly before the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He added, “He’s training in Jacksonville. I’ve spoken with his trainer, and communicated a lot with him and his agent. He’s doing fine. Nothing’s going on at this point, but I guess the big question is—will he be here? For now, he’s in Jacksonville, and we’ll navigate this as we go along.”
Looking back three years, the Colts seemed to have found their future quarterback when they selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick. However, doubts have arisen about his ability to maintain a starting role and whether he’ll get that chance elsewhere.
After struggling through injuries and a disappointing two seasons, the Colts brought in Daniel Jones last offseason to compete for the starting position, and Jones secured that role.
Jones had a solid comeback season, though it was cut short by a torn Achilles tendon, while Richardson’s season ended prematurely due to a fractured orbit. Even with uncertainties lingering around Jones and his free agency this offseason, Richardson and the Colts agreed to explore trade options before free agency began.
Ultimately, the Colts signed Jones for two years at $88 million, firmly establishing him as the starter, if healthy.
Ballard was cautious in his assessment, saying at the NFL combine, “I wouldn’t say he needs a complete restart. Anthony is still young and developing. We’ll see what the future holds. I still believe in him.”
Meanwhile, Richardson might be longing for an opportunity similar to what Jones had last season. His performance hasn’t quite warranted a starting position, yet he possesses enough untapped potential that a struggling team might be willing to give him a shot to flourish in a different setting.
The Cardinals are reportedly considering veteran Jacoby Brissett and could also eye Richardson if they decide against drafting Alabama’s Ty Simpson.
Remarkably, Richardson could well be traded during the upcoming three-day draft event, especially since teams have gained clearer insights regarding their quarterback situations.
