Democratic Representative Subramanyam: I Would Back Democrat Who Compared Israel and Hamas, 'Must Welcome All'

Discussion on Democratic Senate Candidates and U.S. Relations with Israel

During a recent episode of NewsNation’s “Cuomo,” Rep. Suhas Subrahmanyam (D-Va.) expressed support for former Wayne County Health Director Abdul El-Sayed as a potential Democratic Senate candidate. He noted that while he finds the Israeli government’s actions troubling—equating them, in some respects, with Hamas—he still hopes El-Sayed can secure a victory over the Republicans. “We need a majority in the Senate,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity within the Democratic Party.

Batia Unger-Sargon, the guest moderator, pointed out that many Democrats are trying to navigate the complex landscape between extreme positions on issues like ICE policy. She stated that despite disagreements with the current U.S. administration, she believes there should be strong pro-Israel voices within both major parties. She asked Subrahmanyam if he shares this sentiment.

Subrahmanyam responded with skepticism, highlighting the concerning rhetoric he sees from both sides that links Netanyahu’s actions to all Jewish people, which he feels contributes to rising anti-Semitism. He underscored the importance of understanding Israel’s history and its role as a U.S. ally while expressing frustration towards Netanyahu’s policies. “I’m not a fan of him,” he admitted, noting the complexities of the current geopolitical situation.

Unger-Sargon then inquired about the implications of El-Sayed’s potential victory for Jewish Democrats and community members in Michigan. Subrahmanyam reiterated his hopes for El-Sayed’s success, stating the need for a broad coalition within the party to achieve a Senate majority.

Earlier in the discussion, Subrahmanyam had mentioned his support for Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) in the primary.
