Illegal immigrant arrested on suspicion of murdering Loyola student sparks sanctuary city debate

New York Congressman Matt Slater has spoken out against sanctuary city policies after the tragic murder of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman, which involved undocumented Venezuelan immigrant Jose Medina-Medina. Slater referenced the family’s criticism of policy failures and took issue with Chicago Councilwoman Maria Hadden, who suggested that Mr. Gorman was simply in the “wrong place, wrong time.” He believes that the current immigration system is putting innocent people in harm’s way.

Recently, federal officials announced the arrest of a Cuban illegal immigrant with a history of criminal activities. Heredro Valenzuela Rodriguez had evaded deportation for decades, seemingly aided by lenient sanctuary city policies. He was apprehended last month by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Florida while waiting for trial on several serious charges, including possession of cocaine with intent to sell, firearm possession as a felon, and criminal trespassing.

Rodriguez, who was living in the Miami-Dade Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, had a long history of criminal activity. Authorities revealed that he was issued a final deportation order back in 1980 but remained in the U.S. largely due to the soft sentencing in sanctuary states like New York and Maryland, which allowed him to continue endangering innocent lives.

ICE Director Todd Lyons criticized sanctuary policies, stating that they protect individuals like Rodriguez, enabling them to commit crimes against the community. While ICE has yet to respond to requests for comments, it was noted that Rodriguez had numerous convictions and charges, including drug-related offenses and weapons possession. Despite his extensive criminal record, he had reportedly been released from prison multiple times while residing in sanctuary cities.

Lyons emphasized the negative impacts of these policies on community safety and stressed that enforcement will persist regardless of local politics. It remains uncertain whether Rodriguez has secured legal representation following his arrest.
