Shooting Suspect Found Dead in Jail While Awaiting Trial

A naturalized British citizen, accused of a shooting spree in Georgia, was discovered dead in his jail cell as he awaited trial. The individual, Olaorkitan Adon Abel, age 26, was arrested last week after a witness reported seeing him standing over the body of Lauren Bliss, a Department of Homeland Security inspector general.

Authorities indicated that this incident marked the third murder linked to Adon Abel. Previous victims included a woman and a homeless man, raising concerns about a continued pattern of violence.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Abel was found unresponsive shortly after 6:48 p.m. on a Tuesday. Efforts by detention staff to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead 29 minutes later. Officials noted that there was no indication of foul play, but an internal investigation is set to explore the circumstances surrounding his death.

Bliss was attacked on April 13 while walking her dog, suffering both gunshot wounds and stab injuries. A neighbor reported seeing a man attempting to remove her pants following the assault before he fled the scene.

DHS later revealed Abel’s extensive criminal history, which includes charges such as sexual assault, assault on a police officer, obstruction, and more. “These acts of pure evil have devastated our department. Our prayers are with the families of the victims,” stated DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Interestingly, Abel was naturalized during the Biden administration in 2022, raising questions about the background checks for immigrants.

In related discussions, officials have mentioned ongoing efforts under the Trump administration to prevent dangerous individuals from entering the country. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a new screening center aimed at bolstering the review of immigration applications to better identify potential threats to public safety.
