Police Seek Teen in Shooting Incident

Authorities are on the lookout for a 17-year-old, suspected of attempted murder, following a shooting that occurred early Sunday in a red-light district adjacent to the University of Iowa campus. This development was shared on Wednesday.

In total, five individuals, including three students from the University of Iowa, sustained gunshot injuries. Iowa City Police Chief Dustin Liston provided an update, mentioning that one woman is currently in critical condition due to severe head wounds.

Officials have issued an arrest warrant for the teen, alleged to have been involved in the brawl that led to the shooting. Reports suggest that around 40 individuals were part of the altercation. Responding officers reached the scene within 45 seconds, as stated by Liston.

During the incident, the suspect reportedly fired six shots into a busy pedestrian area. This area is known for its rows of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmerman-Smith indicated that, under Iowa law, the Cedar Rapids minor will initially face charges as an adult, due to the nature of felonies against individuals 16 or older.

He is expected to be charged with five counts of attempted murder, with further charges pending once the suspects are taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing, with police executing around three dozen search warrants so far, and additional charges are anticipated.

Chief Liston emphasized commitment to holding those responsible accountable, and urged anyone with information related to the incident or suspects to come forward.

Importantly, Liston clarified that the five victims were not the intended targets in the shooting. “There is no reason to believe they were part of the fight that led up to the shooting,” he said.

Furthermore, Liston detailed the injuries suffered by four other victims: one was hit in the arm and chest, two others in one or both legs, and one in the abdomen. Currently, one individual is hospitalized in stable condition, while the others have been discharged.
