Marlins remind Giants of reality following series victory over Dodgers

After the Giants managed to win 2 out of 3 games against the Dodgers, they quickly found themselves in a tough spot.

The Marlins took advantage of Adrian Houser’s rough outing, which led to a 9-4 loss for San Francisco.

Houser struggled, giving up a career-high of 11 hits, including two home runs, and allowing eight unearned runs. This marked his third defeat of the season as the team prepared for a three-game series against Miami at Oracle Park.

The Marlins (13-13) jumped ahead early, leading 8-0 by the end of the second inning. Sandy Alcantara kept things in check, yielding only three runs on nine hits over six innings against the Giants (11-15).

San Francisco recorded 11 hits, tying for the seventh-best on the season, and was only let down by Rafael Devers and Willy Adames who failed to get on base. The Giants have a perfect record of 6-0 when totaling 12 or more hits in a game.

Jung Hoo Lee made a splash by hitting a solo home run over McCovey Cove in the eighth inning. That was his second home run of the season, contributing to three hits for him on the night, while the Giants managed to get their fourth run in five games.

What It Means

While the Giants secured the series against the Dodgers, they encountered difficulties right after. They’ve now lost two games in a row following a strong shutout win on Wednesday. This particular match was especially tough as they fell to Houser, the only starter without a victory at 1-4.

Who is Hot

Luis Arraez has been on a roll, logging hits in 19 out of 25 games this season, boosting his batting average to .320 with three hits in five attempts during the game. He had been the only player to get a hit in Thursday’s shutout loss and followed up with another against the Giants, driving in the third run of the game for Eric Haas with two outs in the fifth inning.

The pitching staff had been solid, sporting the lowest ERA (2.22) in the MLB over the past week. However, that changed abruptly with the Marlins capitalizing on Hauser.

Who is Not?

Houser’s pitching has been concerning, allowing at least four earned runs in four straight starts, driving his ERA up to 7.36. He let the Marlins score in all four innings that he pitched, culminating in Connor Norby’s three-run home run that enhanced Miami’s lead to 8-0.

Adames has struggled as well, going 0-for-5 in his last outing, which brings his total to just 2-for-28 with 13 strikeouts over the last six games.

Devers is also in a rough patch, with an OPS of .565 and facing two strikeouts and a double play. With a chance to shift the momentum, he stepped up with runners on first and third, only to hit into a double play that was his sixth of the season, which isn’t great considering he’s participated in 26 games. Meanwhile, the Giants are tied for the league lead with 24 double plays as a team.

To The Next

The Giants still have two more games against the Marlins to wrap up their homestand. After finally winning two back-to-back for the first time this season, they’ll be hoping to clinch a third consecutive win.

On Saturday, LHP Robbie Ray (2-3, 2.86) will pitch against RHP Euri Perez (2-1, 4.15) in a matinee matchup.
