Steelers select Drew Allar amid uncertainty with Aaron Rodgers

Drew Allard’s NFL Draft Journey

Despite enduring a rough 2025 season filled with injuries, Drew Allard has secured his place in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The talented quarterback from Penn State was picked by the Steelers with the 76th overall selection, a decision that could have implications for Aaron Rodgers, who hasn’t confirmed his return yet.

Allard had a standout junior year, racking up 3,327 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, even guiding the Nittany Lions to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Unfortunately, his promising run took a hit when he fractured his left ankle during a game against Northwestern, just six games into the 2025 season.

He started his senior year strong, throwing for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns in only six games before the injury. Now, just two months post-surgery, he claims to be “fully recovered” and is eager to enter the NFL Draft.

Allard expressed optimism about his future, stating, “I’m going to be a better version of myself from now on.” He believes the surgery he underwent has made him stronger and doesn’t expect any limitations moving forward. Many athletes have returned successfully from similar procedures.

“When I fully recover and come back, I won’t have to think about anything,” he mentioned, showcasing his readiness.

Meanwhile, rumors swirl about Rodgers’ status with the Steelers as ESPN reported he has yet to meet with management. This leaves some ambiguity about whether Allard could take on the starting QB role next season.

Rodgers is currently a free agent and contemplating retirement after a one-year contract with Pittsburgh in 2025.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II conveyed in March that he’s been in discussions with general manager Omar Khan, acknowledging that things might move quicker this year than last regarding decisions about the team’s quarterback situation.

However, there’s still uncertainty; as it stands, Will Howard, who was a sixth-round pick in 2025 but hasn’t yet played in the NFL, is expected to serve as the first quarterback during offseason activities.
