Nolan McLean’s Pitching Performance and Challenges

Nolan McLean has shown some impressive abilities as a pitcher in the early games of the season, particularly in his first two outings. However, the statistics reveal a concerning trend as the season moves forward.

Despite a batting average of .143 against the fifth batter and an on-base percentage of .211 against the sixth, McLean appears strong. He maintains a 2.67 ERA, which is noteworthy. Yet, things flip when facing batting orders deeper in the lineup.

Against the third order of hitters, McLean’s performance drastically changes for the worse. Among 100 pitchers who logged at least four innings against similar competition, he has a troubling .348 batting average against the 88th-ranked hitter, an on-base percentage of .375 against the 78th, and a slugging percentage of .609, coupled with an alarming ERA of 10.80 against the 91st.

It’s evident that adjusting to the lineup becomes a challenge for McLean. He has stated the importance of mixing it up and keeping hitters guessing as the innings progress.

After pitching six flawless innings against the Twins recently, he felt that Minnesota started to figure him out. In the sixth inning, they broke through with a single, which hinted at what was to come.

Byron Buxton, facing McLean for the third time in that game, launched a two-run homer, further exacerbating his struggles. While McLean had solid contributions from teammates later on, his overall performance still left something to be desired – allowing three runs over a bit more than six innings.

The adage that familiarity breeds success holds true in baseball; the more a player faces a pitcher, the better their chances become. McLean, known for his exceptional breaking balls and ability to spin the baseball, will need to refine his game as he heads into an upcoming doubleheader against the Rockies.

He candidly noted the challenge of facing skilled opponents, acknowledging, “These players get paid to play baseball, and they do it well.” But in the end, he emphasized the necessity for improvement from his side.

The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:40 p.m., with the second game starting shortly after the first concludes. Fans should note that tickets from the canceled game won’t be valid for this makeup event, but digital vouchers will be provided to those affected.
