Tom Emmer Discusses Shooting at WHCD Dinner and DHS Funding Issues Amid Political Tension

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer shared his personal experience regarding the shooting that occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He mentioned needing assistance due to a leg injury and praised the Secret Service for their quick response in apprehending the suspect, Cole Allen, who had anti-Trump motives. Emmer criticized Senate Democrats for stalling full funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) despite escalating threats.

On a recent Sunday Briefing, Emmer emphasized that the shooting underscored the necessity of adequately funding DHS, asserting that law enforcement executed their responsibilities effectively, even amidst uncertainty regarding their compensation.

He pointedly remarked, “This is a significant issue when the Democrats seem to be playing with the safety of the American public—regardless of political affiliation.” He contended that this matter transcends party lines, focusing on the well-being of all citizens.

In the wake of the shooting, which led to the evacuation of President Trump and other officials, Emmer highlighted the Secret Service’s performance under pressure. He noted that despite worries about payment, they handled the situation admirably.

The funding issue for DHS has been stagnant in Congress for over two months. Democrats want operational modifications for agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and have expressed a refusal to support the budget without certain assurances. Meanwhile, Republicans are looking for alternative funding to maintain current enforcement measures.

Emmer also called out Senator Chuck Schumer for obstructing the latest funding proposal, which he claimed had bipartisan support. He expressed concern about political maneuvering jeopardizing national security.

As the chaos erupted, Emmer was observed being assisted from the banquet hall, but he clarified afterward that he wasn’t hurt in the shooting. Using a mobility scooter because of a leg injury, he explained that due to the crowd, he couldn’t leave it on the floor and had to be helped out to reach it.

Authorities identified 31-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California, as the suspect. Reports indicate he had created a manifesto revealing his intentions and had posted anti-Trump and anti-Christian statements on social media.
