Upstate NY father laughs in court while confessing to the murder of his girlfriend and 11-year-old son

Father Pleads Guilty to Double Murder, Shows Unusual Demeanor

A man from upstate New York has confessed to murdering his 11-year-old son and his girlfriend, and shockingly, he smiled and laughed during his court appearance.

David Huff, 43, admitted in court on Tuesday to shooting his girlfriend, Yerardis Tschudi, 32, and her son, Jeremiah Huff, 11, with a shotgun in his stepfather’s Syracuse home in March 2025.

Witnesses reported that Huff displayed a smile and even laughed lightly as Judge Ted Limpert read the charges against him.

When the judge asked, “Do you think this is funny?” the father responded by attributing his behavior to “just not getting the joke out of my head.”

While Huff denied shooting his son in the face, he accepted responsibility for the other actions. “I’m guilty of all of that,” he stated. “No matter what you say, I’m guilty.”

In a dramatic moment, Huff’s eldest son, who wasn’t there when the incident occurred, expressed his shame towards his father during the hearing.

The prosecutor, Rob Moran, chose not to comment on Huff’s demeanor in court.

Moran stated, “I’m focused on my family. I’m focused on Jeremiah. I’m focused on Mr. Chudui. I’m not concerned about how he’s going to react to this.” He stressed that he didn’t have time to worry about Huff’s reactions.

Following a lengthy evaluation of his mental state by medical professionals, Huff pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder after months of legal proceedings.

His attorney, Sean Chase, indicated that experts had concluded any mental incapacity stemmed from Huff’s own alcohol and drug use.

Initially, Huff opted for a guilty plea to second-degree murder instead of first-degree, which would have removed the chance of parole.

Details about his level of intoxication or the specific substances he may have consumed the night of the murder remained ambiguous.

On March 17, 2025, around 9:30 p.m., Huff allegedly opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun at his stepfather’s home, killing Tschudi and Jeremiah. Reports also indicated that he fired at his stepfather.

Concerned, Jeremiah’s mother called 911 shortly before the shooting after receiving an unsettling call from her son.

Huff fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, and police were eventually alerted the next morning when state troopers discovered him in the vicinity of West Seneca Turnpike, not far from where the tragedy unfolded.
