Georgia Officer on Leave After Walmart Incident

A police officer in Georgia has been put on administrative leave following an incident where he was recorded picking up a man and slamming him to the ground inside a Walmart.

The event occurred around 8 p.m. on Saturday after authorities received complaints about a man creating a disturbance in a Walmart in Lovejoy, about 32 miles from Atlanta. Police Chief Steve Wright confirmed the details.

A disturbing 20-second video surfaced showing the officer holding the man, who had his hands restrained, before lifting him up and forcefully throwing him to the ground.

The man’s identity has not been revealed, but it was reported that he was taken to a local hospital afterward. Wright noted that the man will not face any charges.

Details regarding his condition have not been made public.

Witnesses recounted being in shock as they saw the incident unfold. One witness, who went by Dee Dee, shared her experience: “The officer just picked him up, and then bam! He slammed him down. You could hear the thud.” She added that many in the store feared the man was dead and called for the officer’s termination due to excessive force.

The Lovejoy Police Department announced on Sunday that the officer involved has been placed on leave while they investigate the incident.

“We are aware of a video circulating on social media that depicts an incident with one of our officers at Walmart,” said officials. “The video shows physical contact with a restrained individual, and we are investigating the circumstances surrounding this event.”

An internal investigation has been initiated. Officials are looking into incident reports, witness accounts, and department policies to ensure a thorough and fair examination of the situation.

Chief Wright stated that he aims to finish the investigation by the end of the week and emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability. “We want you to know that we are investigating this incident and will share our findings with you,” he remarked.
