Ex-French Ambassador Claims Trump Will Attempt to Influence Midterms

Former French Ambassador’s Claims About Trump and Upcoming Elections

Gerard Araud, who served as France’s ambassador to the U.S. from 2014 to 2019, has made some striking claims regarding President Donald Trump’s intentions for the upcoming midterm elections.

Arauds’s criticisms of Trump are well-documented, and he recently shared his concerns on the public broadcaster France Inter. He suggested that Trump might “rig the midterm elections,” potentially by declaring a state of emergency due to supposed violent incidents.

He went on to speculate that Trump could utilize the anti-immigrant militia ICE to intimidate Black and Latino voters at polling places, significantly affecting voter turnout.

His remarks come at a time when political tensions are particularly high in the U.S. Araud believes that Trump’s language could provoke violence from the left, saying that Trump “expresses violence, brutality.” He added that the current atmosphere of hatred around the administration seems to focus heavily on Trump himself.

Arauds also raised concerns about the prevailing hostile environment, suggesting that Trump’s rhetoric resembles that of a “de facto civil war.” He expressed worries that the discussions happening today about the country’s future might be reflective of deeper societal conflicts.

This isn’t Araud’s first time taking a strong stance against Trump. Upon his departure from the U.S. ambassadorship, he likened Trump’s administration to the court of Louis XIV, describing it as one led by an “old king” who is unpredictable and a little capricious.

His past comments have often stirred controversy, such as a remark made on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor in 2017, where he claimed the U.S. had been insufficiently supportive of its allies against fascist forces in the 1930s.
