Texas worker trapped in 210-degree tar after 50,000-gallon tank bursts in tragic incident

Industrial Accident in Texas Claims Life of Worker

In Texas, a 50,000-gallon tank burst, tragically burying a worker under three feet of hot tar, according to authorities and various media outlets.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the industrial site around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. They quickly began searching for a worker reported “missing” at Martin Asphalt, as stated by Alma Alanis, the city’s emergency management coordinator.

The incident resulted in a significant spill of around 50,000 gallons of tar, overwhelming an unidentified employee under a thick layer of dark liquid. Reports highlight that the temperature of this tar was around 210 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although the worker’s body has been retrieved, the exact cause of this unsettling incident remains unclear, according to Sharon Taylor, CFO of Martin Midstream Partners LP. The aging tanks and the engulfing tar were evident in photographs taken at the site. Typically, this tar is used as a base layer before asphalt is laid.

Officials are monitoring the air quality in the vicinity and confirmed that there is currently no threat to the local community. Cleanup crews are ready to assist with recovery efforts.

“Ensuring safety is a core value for our company,” Taylor remarked in a statement, expressing deep regret over the loss of the employee involved in the accident. “This is a tragic situation, and we are treating it with utmost seriousness.”

She also emphasized that established safety protocols and emergency response plans are in place across their operations, and these measures were activated in light of the incident. A thorough internal investigation has been initiated, focusing on gathering relevant facts. The company is also cooperating with appropriate regulatory bodies regarding the inquiry.

The Pasadena Fire Marshal’s Office will take the lead on the investigation, officials noted.
