Florida Parish Creates Village for Seniors Facing Homelessness
A parish in Florida is developing a small village aimed at supporting seniors who are at risk of homelessness, a concern that’s increasingly relevant given the rising cost of living across the country.
Trinity House LLC, a nonprofit within the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, is spearheading this initiative called Trinity Village. This project, launched in 2024, was created in response to the urgent demand for affordable housing for older adults.
“Seniors represent one of the most at-risk groups regarding housing insecurity. Many are reliant on fixed incomes, and as rent and ownership costs surge, home prices have begun to drop. Additionally, rising property taxes, insurance fees, and maintenance costs are eroding their financial stability,” noted the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.
As reported by EWTN News, Deacon Rey Aguado, the Executive Director of Trinity House Project, mentioned that the increase in population in Pensacola isn’t matched by a sufficient supply of housing options. Consequently, housing prices have soared, putting elderly individuals at greater risk of financial strain. This precarious situation forces some to choose between housing, healthcare, and even basic necessities like food.
“These tough choices often lead to skipping medical care, avoiding the purchase of nutritious foods, or even going without meals altogether,” the article elaborated.
Aguado further stated that “Trinity Village will offer tiny homes for seniors at manageable rental prices,” noting that the village will also include services like case management and mentoring to help residents thrive while safeguarding their health and finances.
This village will be situated near Pensacola Bay and will be located behind the parish pastoral center. Each home will measure about 300 square feet, featuring essential amenities along with on-site laundry. Monthly rental costs are anticipated to be around $500, utility costs included.
A recent Gallup Poll revealed that, for many Americans, the high cost of living tops the list of financial worries, closely followed by concerns related to energy costs, homeownership or rental expenses, and healthcare affordability.
