LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britney Spears Charged with DUI
The pop star was charged Thursday with driving under the influence of both drugs and alcohol in California, according to authorities.
The 44-year-old was hit with a misdemeanor charge related to DUI involving alcohol and at least one drug, as stated by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Spears’ representatives have not provided any comments at this time.
The criminal complaint remains vague about the specific substances involved, as it does not clarify what type or quantity of alcohol or drugs were used.
Following the incident, Spears entered into a substance abuse treatment program. On March 4, she was pulled over on Highway 101 while driving her black BMW, allegedly showing erratic behavior. The California Highway Patrol reported that she appeared impaired, underwent several sobriety tests, and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI involving a combination of drugs and alcohol before being taken to Ventura County Jail.
Spears was released the next day on bail. The police concluded their investigation and submitted the findings to the prosecutor’s office by March 23.
A representative previously described Spears’ actions as “completely inexcusable,” hoping it would mark the beginning of a much-needed change in her life.
Notably, Spears voluntarily participated in drug testing, and her lawyer mentioned she was moved to a treatment facility a little over a month post-arrest.
Her arraignment is set for Monday. Since it’s a misdemeanor, she isn’t required to be present in court, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors stated that the case would follow standard procedures for defendants without a history of drunk driving, road incidents, injuries, and low blood alcohol content.
During the upcoming court appearance, Spears could potentially plead guilty to what is commonly described as “reckless,” facing a likely outcome of one year of probation, credit for time served, a mandatory DUI program, and state fines.
This kind of plea deal is especially pertinent for those who have shown a willingness to seek help and treatment on their own.
The singer owns a residence in Ventura County, just outside the Los Angeles County border. Her court appearance will occur in Ventura, a coastal city with around 110,000 residents, located about 70 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Having gained fame as part of the “Mickey Mouse Club,” Spears became a major star of the 1990s and 2000s with iconic tracks like “Toxic,” “Gimme More,” and “I’m a Slave 4 U.” The Recording Industry Association of America recognizes her albums as largely certified platinum, with two achieving diamond status: “…Baby One More Time” (1999) and “Oops!…I Did It Again” (2000).
In the early 2000s, she became a tabloid sensation while publicly grappling with mental health challenges, which were closely followed by the media.
In 2008, she was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship primarily managed by her father, overseeing her personal and financial decisions for over ten years until it was dissolved in 2021.
Since then, Spears has experienced both marriage and divorce and released a best-selling memoir that reveals much about her life.
In recent years, she has largely stepped back from music, putting out only a few collaborative singles since her last full album in 2016.
