Palestinian FA's Rajoub declines handshake with Israel at FIFA Congress

During the FIFA General Assembly on Thursday, Palestinian Football Association President Djibril Rajoub declined to shake hands or even stand next to Basim Sheikh Slimane, the Vice President of the Israeli Football Association, amidst a tense atmosphere. Both were called to the stage by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, but Rajoub resisted attempts to engage with Slimane.

Infantino reached out to Rajoub and gestured for him to come forward, yet Rajoub remained unresponsive. The Palestinian Football Federation, with Rajoub at the helm, has continuously advocated for Israel’s suspension from international soccer events.

Rajoub defended his stance, emphasizing his commitment to the formal process but insisting that stronger measures are necessary. He stated, “I still respect and abide by the legal process, but I think it’s time for Israel to understand that it should be sanctioned. The policy of double standards should end.” In his comments, he referred to Prime Minister Netanyahu as a “criminal” and questioned how one could shake hands with someone like him.

Rajoub reflected on Infantino’s efforts, saying, “I think Gianni has a right to try to bridge the gap, but he probably doesn’t understand the deep suffering of the Palestinian people.” After this exchange, Infantino addressed the crowd, calling for collaboration, expressing hope for unity in the face of complex issues.

Meanwhile, Slimane stressed the importance of keeping politics out of sports, mentioning that everyone deserves a chance to compete and emphasizing values like respect and equality. The situation remains delicate, underscoring the ongoing challenges facing Israeli sports amid political tensions.
