Hezbollah Launches Attacks Despite Ceasefire

Over the weekend, Hezbollah launched rockets and drones targeting Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. This occurred even as both sides were supposed to be observing a ceasefire.

While one missile was intercepted, the others detonated near Israeli soldiers, fortunately without causing any injuries.

With tensions escalating, President Trump has called for a meeting involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Recent Israeli airstrikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of seven people in Lebanon, following the Israel Defense Forces claiming they struck over 50 Hezbollah positions across the country.

The IDF noted, “Hezbollah is once again breaching the ceasefire agreement. We will continue to respond to threats against Israel’s citizens and military forces.” This comes amidst ongoing violence between Iran-affiliated groups and Israel, despite the ceasefire announcement on April 16.

In response to rising security concerns, Israeli authorities limited gatherings in northern areas to 1,500 people and canceled the annual Lag Bomer celebrations on Mount Meron.

Currently, discussions between Israeli and Lebanese officials are happening in Washington, representing their first direct talks in decades. The backdrop of these discussions is a long history of conflict, with both nations technically in a state of war since 1948.

Israel resumed its military actions after Hezbollah retaliated with missile attacks earlier this year when tensions heightened following a war against Iran and the expiration of a 2024 ceasefire agreement.

The IDF has also created a military buffer zone in southern Lebanon, resembling the areas they controlled until 2000.

The U.S. is advocating for a meeting between Netanyahu and Aoun at the White House, suggesting it could provide Lebanon with a chance to ensure its sovereignty amidst the ongoing instability.

A U.S. Embassy post in Beirut stated, “Lebanon is at a crossroads, and a direct meeting mediated by President Trump could secure critical guarantees for its sovereignty.”
