Russia Asserts Advances on the Frontlines in Its Conflict with Ukraine

Drone Strike in Kherson

KYIV, Ukraine — A drone from Russia hit a minibus in Kherson, killing two individuals, according to local officials on Saturday. This attack marks yet another instance of assaults on civilian areas during Moscow’s extensive invasion of Ukraine.

Regional leader Oleksandr Prokudin mentioned that up to seven others sustained injuries in this incident. Later that same day, another minibus in Kherson was targeted, injuring the driver.

On a different note, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that there has been “quite unusual” activity along the northern border with Belarus. While he didn’t elaborate, he stated that there were movements on the Belarusian side of the border and assured that Ukraine would respond if things escalated.

“We are carefully monitoring the situation and maintaining control. We’ll react as needed,” he remarked.

Belarus, closely allied with Russia, has granted access to its territory for Russian troops and serves as a base for some of Russia’s tactical nuclear arms.

In Ukraine’s Black Sea region, Russian forces have damaged port facilities in Odesa, but fortunately, there were no reports of casualties from that attack.

Since the full-scale invasion began over four years ago, Ukrainian civilians have suffered continuous air assaults. Attempts at negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv over the past year, facilitated by the U.S., have not yielded any ceasefire, as Russia dismissed Ukraine’s proposals amid rising international focus on the conflict in Iran.

Meanwhile, Russia reported on Saturday the capture of the village of Miropilia in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine, where the front stretches approximately 1,250 kilometers (around 750 miles). These battlefield assertions are hard to verify, and Ukraine has not offered immediate remarks on the matter.

In Russia, local authorities in Krasnodar shared that a fire instigated by a Ukrainian attack on an oil terminal in the Black Sea city of Tuapse had been brought under control on Saturday.

Ukrainian drones have targeted the oil refinery and export terminal in Tuapse multiple times over the last couple of weeks, causing fires, evacuating residents, and billowing smoke into the air.

Ukraine is intensifying its long-range strikes on Russian oil facilities as part of a strategy to reduce Russian oil exports, which significantly fund the ongoing invasion. However, the economic consequences remain uncertain, particularly since rising oil prices from the Iran conflict and recent U.S. sanctions relief appear to be benefiting the Kremlin.
