Maine Democratic Senate candidate promises to get arrested if Republicans maintain their majority

Democratic Candidate Graham Platner Makes Bold Promises

Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate from Maine, has declared that he would be “arrested” as a senator if elected, despite Republicans holding a majority in Congress. Platner recently held his first campaign event after Maine Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the Democratic primary. This left him as the likely nominee for the upcoming election in November.

While he expressed optimism about Democrats regaining the Senate majority, some Democratic senators have suggested the need for increased activism within the party, including participating in protests.

Platner has voiced that voters who are concerned about transgender athletes are, in his view, being swayed by wealthy individuals. “If we don’t get a majority and things get worse, I promise you that as a United States senator, I will be arrested,” he stated. This remark echoes sentiments from past Democratic leaders expressing worry that Donald Trump would misuse law enforcement against them.

In 2024, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commented on Trump’s behavior, suggesting that it was crazy to think he might not try to jail her, particularly given his history of saying “lock her up.”

Additionally, during a recent event, Platner emphasized his intentions to leverage the Senate’s investigative powers to counter the Trump administration. He mentioned plans to subpoena members of the White House to answer questions about alleged illegal activities, asserting there is a strong case for impeaching at least two Supreme Court justices.

Platner has encountered controversy in his campaign, particularly over accusations regarding a tattoo resembling Nazi imagery. He has also dealt with backlash from older Reddit posts where he referred to himself as a “communist,” criticized rape victims, and made comments about Hamas attacks.

Despite these controversies, he has publicly apologized for his past remarks and his responses to the criticism, trying to navigate the complex landscape of his candidacy.
