Van Jones Defends Moderate Democrats Amid Fetterman Party Tensions

Van Jones, a CNN commentator and former advisor to Barack Obama, came to the defense of Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, during a recent discussion. He argued that being a moderate within the Democratic Party shouldn’t be frowned upon.

“I think he’s a moderate Democrat, and that shouldn’t be illegal in this party,” Jones stated on CNN’s “The Source with Caitlin Collins.” He raised a thought-provoking question: “Do you really have to align perfectly with Berkeley’s agenda to call yourself a Democrat?” He emphasized that moderate voices have historically been part of the Democratic narrative, even while progressive Democrats have often attracted unconventional figures.

Reports indicated that on the same day, some Republicans sought to sway Fetterman to switch his party affiliation. However, the senator firmly declared, “I’m a Democrat and I’ll always be a Democrat.”

Fetterman has attracted criticism from various congressional members for distancing himself from some Democratic caucus stances, especially regarding issues like Israel and certain far-left viewpoints. Jones noted that the party’s reaction to Fetterman illustrates how extreme the political landscape has become.

“It’s just insane,” he remarked, pointing out the absurdity of someone wanting to support Israel yet facing pressure to identify as a Republican for not endorsing open borders. He added, “I think John Fetterman fits the Democratic Party even less than I do.”

Fetterman has also faced pressure regarding his comments on Iran and has expressed concerns about Democrats losing sight of the true threats facing the nation.

While Fetterman did not outright reject a potential switch in private discussions, he indicated that he had “absorbed the offer.” A source claimed he acknowledged, “I would be a Republican.” In April, Democratic National Committee Vice Chairman Malcolm Kenyatta criticized Fetterman, accusing him of attacking constituents who disagreed with his views. He stated, “You’re a mess @johnfetterman,” indicating frustration over Fetterman’s actions.

Jones wrapped up his comments by asserting that Fetterman should remain a Democrat without facing undue criticism. “He should be a Democrat and not have a lot of nonsense thrown at him,” he said, reiterating his support for Fetterman’s position.
