Gas Prices Surge Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Rock Zierman, who is the CEO of the California Independent Petroleum Association, recently appeared on Barney & Company, where he expressed concerns about state policies that he believes are hindering oil production in California. He warned that this situation is leading to higher gas prices and increasing the state’s reliance on foreign energy sources.
As of Wednesday, the national average price for regular gasoline has climbed above $4.50 a gallon, fueled by ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, which have pressured fuel costs for American motorists. The average price was reported at $4.536, an increase of more than 5 cents from Tuesday’s figure of $4.483, according to AAA.
For context, the highest recorded price for gasoline was $5.016 on June 14, 2022, during President Joe Biden’s administration. In California, the situation is even more pronounced, with the average price hitting a staggering $6.16, making it the highest in the nation.
State Comparisons
In contrast, states like Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Louisiana have managed to keep their averages just below the $4 mark, with figures at $3.962, $3.97, and $3.993, respectively. Meanwhile, several other states are seeing prices that exceed $5 per gallon; for instance, Alaska reports $5.188, Nevada at $5.233, Oregon at $5.332, Hawaii at $5.657, and Washington has the highest at $5.747.

The CEO of Chevron has commented that the economy might “have no choice but to slow down” due to disruptions in oil supplies as a result of the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. This ongoing situation has caught the attention of various stakeholders, including the White House, which was contacted for comments on Wednesday.
For more background, the U.S. has been enforcing a blockade against Iran for over three weeks. In light of these developments, AAA noted that the national average gas price has surged by about 33 cents within a week.
On Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social that “Project Freedom,” which involves movements of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, will be temporarily halted as negotiations proceed. He emphasized that this decision was made considering requests from Pakistan and other nations, alongside the military successes achieved against Iran and progress made in talks with Iranian representatives. Consequently, they have agreed to pause the project while the blockade remains and discussions continue.
