Confrontation Near the White House Leads to Shooting

Surveillance footage has emerged showing a man shot by a U.S. Secret Service agent near the White House on Monday. This incident reportedly occurred after Vice President J.D. Vance’s motorcade moved through the area, during which the suspect allegedly drew a gun and fired at officers.

The individual, identified as Michael Marx, 45, from Texas, was located on Monday afternoon near Northwest 15th Street and Independence Avenue, approximately half a mile from the White House. Officers reportedly spotted what looked like a hidden firearm.

When officers approached, Marx fled and pulled a handgun from his waistband, as stated in a federal affidavit reviewed by news sources. He was then chased through a busy area filled with pedestrians, where he allegedly turned and fired at the Secret Service agents.

Details of the Incident

It’s noted that a male civilian, initially described as a juvenile, was shot in the leg while standing behind an officer. He was hospitalized but is expected to survive, according to the affidavit.

Images filed in court show Marx moving through an intersection before raising his weapon and shooting. Secret Service agents returned fire, hitting him in the hand, left arm, and upper abdomen before taking him into custody.

Notably, this confrontation occurred shortly after the Vice President’s motorcade had passed, although there is no indication from officials that it was a targeted attack.

Background on the Suspect

Authorities later confirmed that Marx was hospitalized, but details regarding his condition remain unavailable. Investigators also recovered a 9mm SIG Sauer handgun from the scene and seized various electronic devices as part of their investigation.

According to court records, Marx lacked a firearms permit in Washington, D.C., and had a prior felony drug conviction in Florida, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm. He is currently facing federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Following his injury, it’s reported that Marx allegedly spat at officers and yelled statements like “Fuck the White House” as he was being transported by ambulance.

Role of the Secret Service

Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn mentioned that the confrontation began after a lifeguard discovered what appeared to be a weapon. He emphasized that trained personnel are constantly looking for potential threats.

Quinn added that when confronted, Marx briefly fled, displayed a firearm, and fired at agents and officers, who then returned fire in defense.

When asked about any possible targeting of President Trump, Quinn declined to speculate, stating, “I can’t say. I’m not going to speculate on that.” His comments point to ongoing investigations that may reveal more details.
