Former Biden officials criticize Xavier Becerra, confused by his progress in the California governor race

Former Biden Officials Critique Xavier Becerra’s Gubernatorial Bid

There’s some chatter among former officials from the Biden administration regarding Xavier Becerra, who seems poised to take the lead in California’s gubernatorial race. Following Representative Eric Swalwell’s unexpected withdrawal last month, Becerra has emerged as a prominent Democratic candidate.

However, his ascent is stirring up concerns among some of his past colleagues, as reported by Politico. They’ve pointed out that his tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services was marked by a perceived lack of effectiveness.

Becerra’s Leadership Scrutinized

Six former officials spoke on the condition of anonymity, sharing that Becerra’s climb to prominence has become a topic of discussion in their circles. One official stated, “Every time we get a new poll, it’s quite a chuckle,” highlighting the administration’s view of Becerra as ineffective during critical times, such as the coronavirus response.

According to another official, he was often overlooked, operating in the shadows of Dr. Fauci and other key figures during the pandemic. Despite leading an important agency, his leadership appeared somewhat peripheral, which raises doubts about his capabilities had he been more in charge.

One anonymous official remarked that Becerra was “absent” from the administration’s pandemic efforts, with another calling his appointment an “unfortunate choice.” They suggested that he struggled with crisis management when it was most crucial, almost seeming unprepared in discussions with President Biden.

An Unexpected Critique on Live TV

Xochitl Hinojosa, who previously served as a communications director for the Biden Justice Department, recently made headlines by openly critiquing Becerra during a live debate. She expressed skepticism about his ability to confront former President Trump, asserting that many within the Biden administration shared her concerns about his competence.

On the flip side, Becerra does have supporters. Former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain described him as one of the most capable cabinet members, noting a strong track record in implementing the President’s policies.

A Divided Perspective

Neera Tanden, another former White House official, dismissed Hinojosa’s comments as “boring” and pointed out Becerra’s achievements, like negotiating Medicare drug prices and covering millions of people under health initiatives. Becerra’s response to her critique was a light jab about who might have been the least popular Cabinet member, hinting at Merrick Garland.

As the campaign progresses, opinions remain split. Some see potential in Becerra, while others doubt his readiness for the gubernatorial role. The race is heating up, and it will be interesting to see how his past influences his future.
