Jets coach Aaron Glenn played down the recent visit from veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.
About two weeks back, Wilson stopped by to meet with the Jets and mentioned that the team had offered him a contract, although nothing has come from it yet.
Interestingly, Wilson has also shown interest in possibly transitioning to a role as a television analyst.
While the Jets could benefit from a seasoned backup for Geno Smith, Glenn emphasized that he’s not particularly eager to make a signing.
“We’re always considering ways to enhance our team, but I think sometimes it gets blown out of proportion,” he said. “We’re in talks with several veteran quarterbacks, but honestly, I’m satisfied with where our quarterback room is.”
There’s been a lot of chatter comparing Glenn to the Jets’ new cornerback, D’Angelo Pons, a second-round draft pick.
Pons stands at 5 feet 8 inches, while Glenn’s previous ranking hovered between 5th and 9th. Both players faced skepticism about their size on their journey to the NFL.
When asked about these comparisons, Glenn reflected, “I see myself as someone who was driven to excel in every aspect. It’s about versatility—playing both corner and nickel, even stepping into safety at times. Leadership, both through actions and words, is key, and he certainly embodies those qualities. I’m not putting too much on him just yet, but it’s clear these traits are part of him.”
Glenn also conveyed pride that people associate Pons with him, stating, “I wish more people compared me to him, given how talented he is. We’ll take our time, ensuring he understands both the outer and inner positions. We’re delighted to have him.”
Pons admitted to looking for footage of Glenn’s playing days after the draft, saying, “He definitely plays like I do. We share some similarities. He was a fantastic player.”
The Jets have been swift in signing their draft picks this year.
On Thursday, they signed three players, followed by four more on Friday.
The signings included David Bailey (four years, $54.7 million), Omar Cooper Jr. (four years, $17.5 million), Pons (four years, $9.8 million), Anez Cooper (four years, $4.5 million), and VJ Payne (four years, $4.4 million). Only fourth-round pick Darrell Jackson Jr. remains unsigned.
Additionally, the Jets announced the signings of several undrafted free agents, including CB Molly Bamba, LB Kendrick Blackshear, TE Chase Curtis, K Will Felin, LS Garrison Grimes, OL Xavier Hill, WR Colin Lacy, WR Malik McClain, WR DT Sheffield, and RB Sam Scott.
