Controversy Erupts Over School Board Members’ Comments on Water Polo Photo
Two members of a California school board are facing criticism after they likened shirtless teenage water polo players in Speedos to exotic dancers and adult performers. This incident emerged after a photo surfaced showing six players from Temecula Valley High School cheering for their baseball team, with some written messages on their chests.
The photo depicted the athletes in brown and yellow swim trunks and was shared on the baseball team’s Instagram, captioned, “Our fans > better than yours. Go Bears.”
However, the lighthearted post escalated into a political uproar after Board President Joseph Komrosky allegedly remarked that the boys were getting “one step closer to becoming Chippendales,” while board member Jen Wiersma referred to them as the “Only Fans crew.”
A parent, Sharon Sardina, shared that the boys stopped by a baseball game on April 28, playfully showcasing their team uniforms while cheering from the stands. “The fans loved it, the team loved it, everyone loved that cheer,” she stated, emphasizing that this behavior is quite typical for water polo players supporting their team.
Though the photo was later deleted from the team’s Instagram, the circumstances surrounding its removal remain unclear.
Sardina noted that Wiersma reposted an edited photo of the boys, concealing their swim briefs with black boxes, adding, “Speaking of dress codes…is our team now a ‘fans only’ crew?” This post was also eventually removed, and Wiersma later issued an apology on her Instagram.
Both Komrosky and Wiersma did not comment when approached by the media, and it’s uncertain if Komrosky has issued an apology. A screenshot shared by Jeff Pack, a co-founder of One Temecula Valley PAC, displayed Komrosky and Wiersma discussing the photo on another social media post regarding the district’s dress code.
In his comments, Komrosky questioned whether the photo was suitable for a baseball team and commended two students for maintaining their decorum. He emphasized the need for stricter dress codes and discipline for those who don’t comply.
Wiersma also criticized the photo, suggesting it appeared to be part of a “fans only” trend, asserting the importance of maintaining standards for student attire.
The comments sparked an array of reactions, with some parents accusing the board members of sexualizing the students. One Instagram user commented, “If this is dangerous, you shouldn’t be around kids,” emphasizing that the boys were just being playful supporters of their peers.
Conversely, some defended the trustees, claiming that the original photo should never have been posted, as it might attract inappropriate attention.
Later, Komrosky reiterated his concerns, stating that he didn’t want the boys to appear as if they were engaging in suggestive behavior. “Our local school district doesn’t need anything like that,” he added.
In response to the controversy, Sardina and her husband have sought meetings with the superintendent and other officials, expressing a desire for a formal apology not only to themselves but also to the students involved. She accused the board of objectifying the students to push a more stringent dress code.
Sardina asserted that the board members, as public figures, have a responsibility to avoid sexualizing minors, stating, “They are… now sexualizing minors, which creates a reputational risk not only for my son but for our family and team.”
Both Komrosky and Wiersma were elected to the board in 2022, representing a conservative majority. Their tenure has also seen previous policies against critical race theory and a ban on certain flags, though some policies were overturned recently.
