Jets Rookies Tackle Playbook in Unique Hotel Setup

This week, if you happened to be exercising at a hotel gym in New Jersey, you might have caught a glimpse of something out of the ordinary.

A group of rookies from the Jets convened at the hotel’s fitness center on Thursday evening. They were there for a walkthrough aiming to get familiar with the rookie minicamp playbook. The idea was for them to collaborate rather than study separately in their rooms. However, space was a little tight.

So, I found myself squeezed in between the elliptical and the stationary bikes.

“We had some space issues doing walk-throughs in the weight room,” said quarterback Cade Klubnik. “I’m running about a three-yard route, but hey, better than nothing.”

The next day, the rookies managed to secure a ballroom, allowing them to practice running some deeper routes.

Leading the effort were Klubnik, along with first-round draft picks Kenyon Saddiq and Omar Cooper Jr.

“It was a group of players just trying to succeed,” Cooper remarked.

Klubnik added that their official meetings would wrap up around 7 or 8 p.m., and then they would reconvene at 9 p.m. for their spontaneous practice sessions.

“We want to ensure we look good out there,” Klubnik noted. “We all study in our rooms late into the night, trying to make sure we have all our notes sorted by the next day. I really want Omar to have a great day out there, to feel confident and run those routes without overthinking. When I’m on the field, I don’t want to be bogged down by a million thoughts.” He emphasized the importance of teamwork and staying on top of their responsibilities.

The playbook provided to the rookie Jets is a condensed version for minicamp, yet Klubnik mentioned it’s still about 70 pages long.

That’s quite the load to process in such a brief period. The rookies seemed to find a way to make the most of their study time, though they likely drew some curious looks from other hotel guests in the process.
