Seinfeld Takes a Jab at Friends

Jerry Seinfeld recently shared his thoughts on the iconic sitcom “Friends” during the Netflix Is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles. He humorously suggested that the show was essentially a repackaging of his own hit series, “Seinfeld,” but with a more attractive cast.

According to reports, he told the audience at the Greek Theater, “Here’s my theory about ‘Friends.’ My show aired in ’89 or ’90, and ‘Friends’ came a few years after.” He went on to speculate that NBC had noticed the success of his show and thought, “Why not do something similar but with good-looking people?”

He humorously acknowledged that it was a savvy decision, saying, “And it was a very good idea. I think it worked.”

The crowd reacted enthusiastically when they guessed his favorite TV show during his set, leading to laughter when someone shouted “Seinfeld.” Other comedians in attendance quickly dismissed that idea with playful scoffs.

In a light-hearted moment, he joked about the absurdity of loving a show you’re actually in, quipping, “Do you go to the bathroom mirror and say, ‘This is amazing. I love this show. I’m in every episode’?”

Seinfeld also gave a nod to other popular shows like “Breaking Bad,” before circling back to the comparison with “Friends.”

His own series, co-created with Larry David, debuted on NBC in 1989, becoming a defining sitcom of the 1990s with stars like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander. “Friends,” on the other hand, premiered five years later in 1994 and became a cultural phenomenon, running for ten seasons with a beloved ensemble cast that included Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox.
