A high school senior in Tennessee expressed her outrage during a school board meeting after being subjected to inappropriate comments from a board member. Hannah Campbell took aim at Keith Irvin, calling out the “cowards” who didn’t defend her and her boyfriend.
Her passionate speech on Thursday came about a month after Irvin approached her during a public meeting and made an unwelcome remark, saying, “It’s hot, you know that?” and inquiring about her school.
“I will not forgive you,” Campbell stated bluntly, addressing the board member, who appeared uncomfortable sitting with his arms crossed. A local news outlet, WVLT, covered her fiery remarks.
She emphasized that Irvin’s comments were not just unwanted but also “sexist and derogatory.” She believed that he would never make similar remarks toward male students.
In her four-minute speech, Campbell made it clear that the disrespect she faced was serious. Irvin, visibly affected by her words, had previously claimed his comments were misunderstood, but many students were not convinced.
“I won’t forgive you, and I won’t accept any false apologies aimed at protecting yourself. You don’t deserve that kind of reassurance,” she said, stressing the discomfort she felt during the incident on April 2nd.
Campbell also criticized Irvin’s colleagues who stayed silent during the confrontation. She labeled them as “cowards,” singling out those who used religious justification to refrain from addressing the issue.
Despite the uproar and calls for his resignation, Irvin remains in his position since he is an elected official. A petition demanding his removal garnered over 6,700 signatures.
Irvin defended himself by suggesting he was simply acknowledging Campbell’s intelligent questions during the meeting, attributing his comments to his upbringing. “You know, I’m an old-school guy. I’m an old farm boy. I meant no harm. I was just proud of her,” he explained in a recent interview.
