Trump Meets Xi Jinping Ahead of Major Bilateral Discussions
President Donald Trump recently met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, just before what promises to be a crucial bilateral meeting for both nations. The Chinese welcomed Trump in a formal and respectful manner.
Earlier that day, Trump arrived in an armored vehicle and was greeted by Xi in front of a throng of military personnel, distinguished guests, musicians, and children near the Great Hall of the People.
After an exchange of handshakes, the two leaders introduced each other to various dignitaries, standing under a decorative red and yellow canopy for a photo-op accompanied by the national anthems of both the U.S. and China.
“This was the greatest honor I’ve ever seen,” Trump remarked once they entered the Great Hall. “I think I was particularly moved by those kids. They were joyful, they were beautiful. The military, of course, was impressive. But those kids really stand out. They symbolize so much, and I’m sure they mean a lot to you too.”
The ceremony signified the official beginning of Trump’s significant visit, transitioning from the ceremonial pageantry to a series of discussions centered on trade, security, and efforts aimed at stabilizing U.S.-China relations.
This meeting will likely challenge whether public displays of diplomacy can genuinely contribute to resolving the longstanding issues between the two countries.
During the opening event, Trump took time to walk around, watching children wave flags and hold flowers, while a Chinese military band performed. Xi was also observed greeting many of Trump’s aides, including policy adviser Stephen Miller and communications director Stephen Chan.
After the ceremony, the public portion of the discussions appeared quite brief. “We look forward to addressing key issues that are significant for our nations and the world,” stated Xi’s translator.
