Persecution of Christians Worldwide
Christian communities around the globe face significant challenges, particularly in certain countries where practicing their faith can result in severe consequences, including torture, imprisonment, or even execution—just for their belief in Jesus Christ.
One such country is North Korea.
Ryan Braun, the CEO of Open Doors, explains, “If you possess a Bible, there’s a high likelihood that you and your entire family will be sent to a labor camp, perhaps for life, never to be seen again.” This sentiment was echoed by Blaze TV host Allie Beth Stuckey.
He continues, stating that identifying as a Christian can be equivalent to receiving a death sentence in North Korea, where loyalty to the state supersedes all, including God.
“For Christians, who uphold a higher authority than the state, they are immediately viewed as adversaries. They are often seen as enemies of the state, or occasionally, as supporters of the West,” he added.
Public executions of Christians are not uncommon either. “Sometimes, the government feels the need to remind people who’s in charge, showing the repercussions of dissent,” he notes.
Nevertheless, despite the formidable threats, many Christians in North Korea remain steadfast. Braun estimates that there are about 400,000 Christians in the country, and this number is growing. He mentioned that Open Doors is working on establishing safe housing just across the border “where individuals can recuperate.”
“It’s truly humbling to witness individuals who have escaped North Korea finding refuge in these safe spaces and gradually regaining their health. Their ultimate goal is to return and continue their mission,” he elaborated.
These individuals often embody a mindset of, “How can I equip myself to return and help spread the gospel to my friends and neighbors?” Braun reflected.
